Keeping in Touch 1st May 2020
Please pray for the Repose of the Soul of Bishop Leo McCartie, who sadly died on 23rd April, aged 94.
Patrick Leo McCartie was born in Hartlepool on the 5th September 1925. He studied for the priesthood at St Mary’s College, Oscott and was ordained priest on the 17th July 1949 at St Teresa’s, Trent Vale in Staffordshire. He spent a year as an assistant priest at St Chad’s Cathedral, followed by six years on the teaching staff at Cotton College and as assistant priest in St Wilfrid’s, Cotton. After relatively short spells as an assistant priest in parishes in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and then Wednesbury, he was made the Diocesan Inspector of Schools in 1962. In 1968 he was made the Administrator of St Chad’s Cathedral.

On 20 May 1977, Bishop Leo was ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop of Birmingham and Titular Bishop of Elmham. In February 1990, he was appointed as the tenth Bishop of Northampton where he served until his retirement in 2001. Following his retirement, Bishop Leo lived at Aston Hall before moving to St Joseph’s Home, Harborne in 2012. On 17th July, 2019, Bishop Leo celebrated 70 years of priestly ministry surrounded by bishops, priests, family and friends and the community at St Joseph’s Home.
We pray for Bishop Leo’s family and friends and for all who mourn him. May he rest in peace. For a fuller biography of Bishop Leo McCartie, please visit the diocesan website or click on the link below.

A Prayer in the time of Coronavirus

Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness.
At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.
Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.
Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbours from helping one another.
Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.
Lord Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.
Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.
Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair.
May they know your peace. Amen.

Our contact at St Chads is Abigail Martin and she had asked us to pass in her sincere thanks to everyone from Our Lady of the Wayside. The Sanctuary are truly grateful.
