Why do we come to Mass? How often have your heard people say, ‘You don’t have to go to church to be a good person,’ or ‘You don’t have to go to church to be a Christian? But is this really true? Our faith cannot be reduced to obeying a simple moral code because if that were the case why would we need to come to Mass. There must, therefore, be more to our faith than just being good. It is this very question that Jesus himself answers in today’s Gospel reading when he says, ‘I am the bread of life.’ Putting it another way our faith is nothing without Christ. Hence, we come to Mass for three main reasons. Firstly, because we need God. Secondly because we need each other and finally because we are sent out into the world to make Christ known. That does, of course, involve being good. So let me finish with a question of my own, ‘If you really knew Christ, why would you not want to come to church?’
God Bless
