Pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi

30th November to 7th December 2020

Spiritual Leader Fr Stephen Squires

This is a seven-day pilgrimage staying four nights in Rome and three in Assisi. Pilgrims will have the opportunity to visit some of the most important shrines and other sites in both cities. The aim of the pilgrimage is to enable people to experience selected sites at a reflective pace, rather than cramming as much as possible into the time available. In particular, our time in Assisi is intended to have the character of a short retreat offering a few peaceful and prayerful days in this beautiful medieval city steeped in the spirituality of St Francis and St Clare.

In both cities we will be staying in convent guest-house accommodation provided by religious sisters which offers simple yet high quality hospitality and the assurance of a warm welcome and attentive service. All rooms are en-suite.

Mass will be celebrated daily, either in one of the churches visited or the chapel attached to the convent, and there will also be the opportunity to pray the Divine Office together each day.

£750 per person in a twin room. The supplement for a single room is £75 for the week. Please note that the number of single rooms is limited and they will be allocated in order of booking.

The price includes:

Return direct flight from Birmingham to Rome Fiumicino airport including one piece of hold baggage per person;

Coach transfers from Fiumicino – Rome – Assisi – Fiumicino;

Bed and breakfast accommodation in Rome;

Bed, breakfast and evening meal accommodation in Assisi.

The price does not include travel insurance, transport to/from Birmingham airport, lunch and dinner in Rome or lunch in Assisi.

Mon 30 Nov 07.45 Depart Birmingham Airport on direct flight to Rome Fiumicino, arriving 11.30.

Mon 30 Nov – 4 nights bed and breakfast accommodation with Thurs 3 Dec the Pallottine Missionary Sisters, Viale delle Mura Aurelie 7B, 00165 Roma. This is located on the Janiculum Hill, a short walk from St Peter’s Square.

Our stay in Rome will include visits to St Peter’s, and other major basilicas (including the celebration of mass). If the Holy Father is in Rome, we will apply to attend the General Audience on Wed 2nd December. We will visit other sites of religious and historical interest including San Giorgio in Velabro (Cardinal Newman’s titular church). There will also be some free time for pilgrims to explore Rome at their leisure.

Fri 4 Dec After breakfast, depart Rome for coach transfer to Assisi. Please note; because the coach cannot enter the old city there will be a short walk on arrival. Luggage will be transported by van to our accommodation.

Fri 4 Dec – 3 nights half-board accommodation (bed,

Sun 6 Dec breakfast and evening meal) with the Angeline Franciscan Sisters, Via Metastasio 18, 06081 Assisi, close to the Basilica of St Francis. The convent buildings include the 11th century church of San Giacomo (St James) which predates St Francis.

While in Assisi we will visit the Basilicas of St Francis and St Clare, housing the tombs of the two saints, and other sites of interest including St Francis’ family house, the convent of San Damiano where Francis received his calling, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli built to enclose the original church given to St Francis’ first community and the site of his death in 1226.

Mon 7 Dec Early morning departure from Assisi for coach transfer to Rome Fiumicino.

12.20 depart Rome Fiumicino on direct flight to Birmingham, arriving at 14.10.

Please Note

Given the nature of the pilgrimage, a certain amount of walking is required and in Assisi (particularly) some of the streets are quite steep and uneven. For those who wish, taxis are plentiful in both cities, although the cost of these will be the responsibility of individual pilgrims.

Whilst early December is a relatively quiet and less busy season for visitors in both Rome and Assisi, the weather can be quite cold, especially in Assisi due to its higher altitude. There is also the possibility of rain, so please come prepared.
